Hi all!
This is my first attempt at writing a blog!
Summer was a bit of a wash out here in Cornwall - most of it was wet and dull, with a few spells of blistering heat.
I'm trying to understand and plan that climate change seems to be having a real affect on us here in Cornwall.
Things we expect to happen in the Spring, didn't happen until early summer, some summer things started in spring, and now we have Autumn... I think!
Management of the farm is very weather dependent.
Our spring grass is starting later than in previous years, which means we may struggle to get enough good grass for ewes and new born lambs. I've noticed a wild fluctuation over the past few years, so I've made the decision not to lamb in 2024, to give our grazing a chance to pick back up, if the grass is delayed.
We've also noticed our trees, which are forage for the goats and sheep were very late this year in coming to leaf, and that's had the knock on effect of them still being in leaf now; it really doesn't seem Autumnal yet!
One hot spell during the summer meant the grass stopped growing, so instead of being able to hay make, we had to turn the sheep onto our hay field.... which then led to us having to buy in hay!
It's a perpetual juggle!
The positives of this year so far is the amount of support I've had from customers! I've created a few new products, and they have been very well received.
I sold out of my 12 Days of Christmas box in SEPTEMBER - so I've spent the last few days creating a whole new set, which I listed up on the 1st October.
This week (2nd October) is an exceptionally busy one - we are moving sheep to winter grazing, and in VERY exciting news, I'm attending my first wool festival at Three Bags Full in Liskeard on Saturday 7th October. I intend to take lots of pics, and my next blog will let you know how it went!
Take care for now, and speak soon!
